While Fred is based in Northern California, he travels regularly for work and is happy to take on projects with a travel component.

The Center for Land-Based Learning (CLBL), based in Woodland, California, is a nonprofit whose mission is to \"inspire, educate, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders and natural resource stewards.\"
I was commissioned to photograph their working farm facilities in Yolo County and the programs they offer at each of their sites. I also had the opportunity to photograph farmers in their apprentice and training programs along with program graduates who are now running their own successful farms.
The images were used for marketing, web and outreach materials.
The California Commercial Fishing Apprenticeship (CCFA) program run by California Sea Grant scientists Theresa Talley and Carrie Culver offers training to people interested in a career in commercial fishing.
Most of the training takes place on or around the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market, a Saturday morning fish market along San Diego Bay where local commercial fishing boats can sell their fresh seafood to the public and restaurants. The program gives trainees unique exposure to various aspects of the industry by taking place in an active fish market.
Trainees get to learn from commercial fishing crews, vendors that sell the seafood, and the local seafood restaurants who buy at the market
The training also offers a solid foundation in marine science, fisheries management, data collection, safety, seamanship, marketing, and business, which makes captains more willing to hire graduates of the program versus someone who has no background in fishing.
California Sea Grant also hosts a petting pool at the market as an education and outreach effort so the public can learn more about native species and conservation efforts to protect them.

This is a project that explored the ranching/dairy farming business in the central valley during COVID-19.
Some small dairy farms have started producing their own butter, cheeses and other dairy products to help make ends meet and to build a bond with customers who are looking to buy their food produced locally.

A California state law, passed in 2017, known as AB 617 was supposed to create a “groundbreaking program to measure and combat air pollution at the neighborhood level.” Four years and nearly $1 billion later, has it made a difference?
These images are from Stockton, California, one of 15 targeted communities that was supposed to see reductions in air pollution from AB 617 and its environmental justice component.
